Summer Enrichment Opportunities


Welcome to TL's webpage for activities during the summer!  Summer vacation is typically approximately 10 weeks long, between the end of final exams in June and the first day of school in August.  Opportunities include camps, classes, internships, jobs, volunteering...relaxation & vacation!  Check back periodically, as we will add new opportunities from time to time.  And note that due to COVID-19, it is possible that all of these programs will have changes, including being moved online.

College of Marin. June-July. Deadline varies.

Bridge Hacks, July.  Free, online, 48-hour hackathon, for high schoolers and middle schoolers!  Workshops for iOS apps, python, internships, and more; win drones, gift cards, and more! Sign up here!

NSLC/National Student Leadership Conferences: UC Berkeley, UCLA, 12 others in the US, plus Duke/Singapore & Yale/Singapore

Oxbridge Academic Programs: Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Spain, France, Cambridge, Oxford

Johns Hopkins Univ. CTY/Center for Talented Youth.  California, Maryland, New Jersey, New York. Dates vary.  4 programs: Academic Explorations, Civic Leadership, Global Issues in the 21st Century, Intensive Studies. Financial aid available. Application available soon, deadline TBA.  

Abbey Road: programs in Greece (on the island of Crete, programs in Greek mythology, creative writing, photography); Boston (college success, and leadership in human rights, advocacy, and international relations); Santa Barbara (film, acting, screenplay writing, social media and journalism), France, Spain, and Italy, depending on COVID.  Deadline: varies.  

San Diego State/Creative Minds Academy.  Programs in Acting, Coding For Creatives, Comic & Graphic Novels, Debate, Film, Music Production, Musical Theatre, Social Media & Digital Entrepreneurship.  July 5 - 31, 2021Cost: $9,950;  financial aid only available for students admitted to San Diego State for fall 2021.  Deadline: unspecified, but program accepts only the first 40 per focus area.  

Drexel University, Philadelphia & New Jersey.  Various programs (many residential), in business, computer science, engineering, environmental studies, medicine.  Deadlines vary.  

Summer at Columbia. Columbia College, Chicago, IL. Courses in filmmaking, musical theater, game development, digital music production, screenwriting, illustration. Financial aid is available. Deadline ASAP, programs fill on a rolling basis. 

Boston University: High School Honors (6 weeks, for rising juniors or seniors; take undergrad courses), RISE/Research in Science and Engineering Internship/Practicum (6 weeks; rising seniors; conduct academic research in a university lab), Academic Immersion (3 weeks; for rising seniors or juniors; Psychology, Medicine, or Creative Writing), Summer Challenge (2 weeks; students take seminars of their choice; rising seniors, juniors, or sophomores), Summer Preview (1 week; students take one subject of their choice; for rising sophomores, 9th grade or 8th grade).  Financial aid available for some. Deadlines vary.  

University of Massachusetts: online courses range from astronomy, business, computer science, equine, music, pre-vet, psychology, and others.   Financial aid available.  Deadlines vary, students admitted on a rolling basis until filled.  

Camp Cardiac: one-week;-long day camps, offered nationwide including San Francisco.  Provides a foundation for heart-healthy living with an emphasis on both diet and exercise; primary focus is on care and maintenance of the heart, also provides an excellent starting point for careers in all fields of medicine.  Scholarships available.  Deadline: filled on first-come, first-served basis.  

Camp Neuro:  one-week-long day camps, offered nationwide including San Francisco.  For students interested in exploring a career in medicine or psychology; primary focus is on care and maintenance of the brain as well as psychology, also provides excellent starting point for careers in all fields of medicine.  Scholarships available.  Deadline: filled on first-come, first-served basis.  

---one of the newest (added April 18)--->: Bay Area Metro Transportation CommissionAn online, six-session Summer Academy in July to acquaint high school students with regional government with a particular focus on key issues like the air we breathe; the neighborhoods we live in; how we get to work, school, exercise; and other factors that shape our communities' health.  Questions like how long is a bridge supposed to last? Why are there so many potholes? Why is housing so costly? Is the water really rising around the Bay?  Social and environmental justice are key.  Students must have completed 9th grade and also be 16. Deadline: unspecified, but space is limited.  

Fir Acres Writing Workshop: at Lewis & Clark College, Portland, OR, June-July. For rising Seniors/2022, Juniors 2023, and Sophomores 2024. Financial Aid available. Application available now, Priority deadline Jan. 1 2021.--->one of the newest (posted March 4)  Sewanee/University of the South, Young Writers ProgramFor rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Cost: $2,400.  Deadline: encouraged by February 19, but will review after that, also.

Point Reyes National Seashore AssociationNature science camps and adventure camps.  Scholarships available.  

WPI/Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts).  Frontiers (rising grades 12 & 11, July 13-August 14, $2,148); and Launch (rising grades 10 & 9, August 3-7, $299).  Courses include app development, biotech, calculus, drama, economics, engineering, physics, psychology and robotics.  Deadline: June 15, 2021.  

University of Vermont: Courses in: photography, biomedical science, drones, health & medicine, environmental science, neuroscience.  Dates: July 6-30, 2021Cost = $2,580; financial aid not available.  Deadline: June 25, 2021

Boston University/Journalism June-July 2021 (3 programs).  Cost: $1,200.  Deadlines: June 11-July 9, 2021.

Next Year/Summer 2022

COSMOS California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Cruz, July-Aug. 2021 (dates TBA). Deadline ~Feb. 7, 2022.

CSSSA/California State Summer School for the Arts.  Through CalArts, Valencia, CA, July-Aug. 2021 (dates TBA).  Cost: $2,250, financial aid available. Application available fall 2020, deadline ~February 10, 2022.

CSI/Conservation Science Intensive,  Stinson Beach (Audubon Canyon Ranch).  For girls interested in deepening their naturalist skills and explore conservation science!  Deadline: February 19, 2022.  

Carnegie Mellon Pre-College. Carnegie Mellon U., Pittsburgh, PA.  Courses in Architecture, Art, Computational Biology, Design, Drama, Game Academy, Music, Math & Science, Writing & Culture. Financial aid available. Deadline: March 17, 2022.

TryEngineering Summer Institute Through UC Riverside, Texas A&M, and Vaughn College of Aeronautics & Technology (New York).  Cost varies, ~$2,200; financial aid is available!  Deadline: ~March 6, 2022.  

Reynolds Young Writers Workshop: through Denison University, Granville, OH, June 2021. For rising Seniors/2021 and Juniors/2022.  Financial aid is available.  Application available Jan. 6, deadline ~March 8, 2022.

Stevens Institute of TechnologyBusiness and STEM programs including pre-med and comp sci.  June-July.  Cost: $1,000-$2,000.  Deadline: ~March 15, 2022.

Seattle University. Business (project-based learning program with business & economics classes focused on social entrepreneurship), and AI4ALL (learn about the intersection of modern technology and criminal justice issues, such as bias and equity. AI4ALL is project-focused and will include engagement with law enforcement and Seattle area tech companies).  Cost: $695, and full scholarships also available!   Deadline: ~March 30, 2022

NYU/New York University: 6 weeks, for rising seniors and juniors.  Courses include arts & media; business; education; health; humanities & social sciences; STEM.  Deadline: ~April 1, 2022.  

Chicano Latinx Youth Leadership Project: For rising 12th and 11th graders.  Bay Area Institute, at UC Berkeley, June 2021; AND Statewide Leadership Conference, July 11-18, 2021FREEDeadline: ~April 5, 2022.

American Red Cross, Leadership Development CenterWorkshops on topics including disaster preparedness, diversity, public speaking, leadership, and international relations; designed to cultivate core leadership skills such as teamwork, public speaking, and diversity awareness.  Cost: $25.  Open to grades 9-12.  June 21-24, 2021.  Deadline: ~April 15, 2022.  

--->one of the newest (added April 13): EEqual (a youth non-profit supporting students experiencing homelessness) is currently looking for individuals to run our TikTok account and other social media! Students will be immersed in the world of social media, content creation, advertising, etc. It is so much more than just creating videos. Any students interested in the world of media and advertising will surely benefit from this!  EEqual has tons of volunteer and leadership opportunities available for teenagers to take part in this summer. Deadline: ~April 22, 2022

Penn/University of Pennsylvania.  Classes include arts, biomedicine, chemistry, coding, communications, data analytics, humanities, math, neuroscience, physics, and social justice.  Cost: $2,500-4,566, no financial aid available.  Deadline: ~May 1, 2022
